Q.
Has anyone got a call from the NGO? I haven't got one yet.
Archana
Vishwanathan
We're happy to
say that we've received an overwhelming response to Teach India — more
than 55,000 have already indicated their intent to come on board. So far over
6,000 have already been placed with NGOs according to their location and time
preference. As per the placement process, you are not supposed to get a call
from the NGO, but the number of the NGO coordinator you have to call will be
communicated to you. If you have not received this yet, please be patient
— we're currently processing many thousands of these applications, and
we'll get back to everyone in a few weeks, as soon as a suitable NGO placement
is
available.
Q.
What subjects can we teach?
Hardeep
Saluja
Volunteers can teach a
variety of topics, including basic education, remedial classes and even
story-telling. Which particular programme a volunteer is assigned will depend on
the dialogue with the NGO to assess the volunteer's capability and interests and
the NGO's
need.
Q. Do
I need any specific qualifications to apply for the initiative?
No, but the volunteer should
be a graduate. A rapport with kids is also a great qualification.
Q. How will
I know whether I have been selected or not?
Rohit
Gupta
As soon as we find a
suitable slot with one of our affiliate NGOs, you will hear from
us.
Q. There
are other pockets of India which need such initiatives. I think the Times Group
should go beyond the metros because education is the demand of every part of
India.
Anuj
Srivastav
Teach India has been
launched in Delhi, Mumbai, Chennai and Kolkata in the first phase, due to the
logistics involved in managing tie-ups with NGOs and coordinating with
volunteers. In the following months, Teach India will be rolled out to other
centres where TOI staff is present to coordinate. However, even in areas where
TOI is not present, we hope that people will come forward to volunteer with NGOs
in their area.
Q. Will
volunteers be paid?
No, Teach
India is not designed to provide any monetary incentive or reimbursement to any
participant. All volunteers are stepping forward out of a feeling of pure
goodwill and the desire to help create a better
future.
